English Words for Thinking and Opinions (Beyond “I think”)

In Ukrainian, you'd use a different word for weighing a decision, reflecting on something, or just needing more time. In English, most learners default to I think — and all that nuance disappears. This post covers the English words for thinking and opinions that actually exist, with examples, grammar notes, and Ukrainian translations.

You’re in a conversation. Someone asks your opinion, or shares an idea, or wants to know what you’ve decided. You know what you want to say. But in English, it all comes out as think.

I think it’s a good idea.

I think you should consider it.

I think we need more time.

Every sentence starts the same way. Every nuance (the weighing, the hesitation, the careful deliberation) disappears. English has words for thinking and opinions that carry all of that meaning. They just don’t get taught alongside think.

In Ukrainian, you’d say something different for each of those situations. You’d зважити, обміркувати, замислитися. The word would carry the meaning.

English has those words too. They just don’t get taught alongside think.

Words for thinking carefully about something

consider

розглядати, зважувати, враховувати, брати до уваги, обмірковувати

Don’t make any decisions before you’ve considered the situation.

One common mistake: consider is followed by a gerund, not an infinitive.

I considered asking for my money back. ✓
I considered to ask for my money back. ✗

think something through

продумувати, дістатися до суті справи

Use this when you need to work out all the parts of something before deciding.

I need time to think things through.

think something over

обмірковувати, продумувати, зважувати

Similar to think through, but softer — more about taking time before giving an answer.

Why don’t you think it over and give me a call in a couple of days?

reflect (on)

серйозно роздумувати, замислитися над чимось

Use this for deeper, slower thinking — looking back at something, not just deciding what to do next.

He had time to reflect on his successes and failures.
It made her reflect on how much had changed.

overthink

зациклюватися, ускладнювати, перевантажувати думками голову

When thinking becomes a problem in itself.

I overthink everything and worry too much.

How to say “не мороч мені голову” in English

There’s no direct translation — but depending on the situation, you might say:

Don’t bother me! — don’t disturb me
Don’t waste my time! — get to the point
Get off my back! — stop pressuring me

Useful expressions with the “thought” (думка)

You probably know thought as the noun form of think. But it also means міркування, намір, роздум — and it shows up in some very common expressions.

I’ve been giving your proposal a lot of thought.

And in conversation:

  • My first thought was… — перше, що спало на думку
  • Deep in thought — занурений у думки
  • On second thought… — а втім, добре подумавши (when you’re changing your mind)
  • Food for thought — їжа для роздумів
  • Hold that thought! — зачекайте, повернімося до цього (don’t lose that idea — we’ll come back to it)

Want to hear native speakers use these words and phrases?

Now try using them yourself

Reading new words isn’t enough — you need to use them. Try expressing these sentences in English without reaching for think:

  1. Я серйозно роздумую про те, щоб звільнитися.
  2. Я серйозно зважила твою пропозицію і ось що вирішила.
  3. Це моя провина. Я не дуже добре все продумала.
  4. Вона сиділа, замислившись про те, як змінилася її ситуація останнім часом.
  5. Жінки часто зациклюються на стосунках.
  6. Слухай, мені треба йти, тож обговоримо це пізніше.
  7. Ні, дякую, не треба. Втім… давайте, може стати в нагоді.
